GLEN ROCK, Pa. – Adhesives Research, Inc., a leading independent developer and manufacturer of high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), tapes, specialty coatings, films and laminates has developed a dual stage adhesive technology that enables alternative design, assembly and manufacturing process options for OLED encapsulation.
The company’s Dual Stage PSA/Ultra Violet (PSA/UV) system is formulated to be cured by UV light to form structural bonds. Supplied in an easy peel-and-stick coated tape, the first stage demonstrates the instant bonding properties of a pliable PSA. The second stage involves momentary exposure to UV light to quickly form a strong, yet flexible bond to function as a superior barrier to moisture and oxygen – properties important for OLED encapsulation. This technology can also be used to form strong, thin bond lines, while eliminating expensive pre-cure fixturing. Ideally suited for flexible substrates and displays, the PSA/UV technology enables roll-to-roll manufacturing for discrete or multiple part assembly.
Some of the PSA/UV system benefits, which address the challenges manufacturers face when using conventional encapsulation systems, include:
- Applies as a conventional PSA (from a film or sheet) and cures within few minutes at room temperature.
- Improved barrier properties after transformation that may eliminate the need for desiccants used with liquid adhesives.
- Very low shrinkage and low VOC emissions.
- Consistent thickness with dimensional stability for well-defined bond lines.
- Bond remains flexible post-cure, eliminating cracks when bent.
PSA/UV also offers several manufacturing efficiencies, such as ease of handling and use, no post-heat program to complete cure or control shrinkage, and the ability to pre-cut parts to shape for a perimeter seal or complete coverage "face" seal.
