Pharmaceutical-grade pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) have played a critical role in the function and accurate delivery of transdermal drug delivery systems.  This article discusses how new advances in adhesive technology over the last decade have evolved from passive transdermal patches to needle-free delivery of therapeutics, active systems such as iontophoretic drug delivery, and specialized coating technologies for use in new applications and alternative treatment sites.  A few examples of adhesive technologies discussed include electrically conductive PSAs, dissolvable films, and porous adhesives.
