The oral thin film (OTF) technology platform is a proven and accepted form of drug delivery for pediatric medications. This dissolving film dosage format offers developers great flexibility in base chemistry and formulation to address two key attributes important when formulating for pediatric populations: tolerability and disintegration. This article reviews a number of special considerations when formulating dissolvable films for pediatric products including taste-masking approaches and approaches for loading active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into dissolvable oral thin film formats.
