Transmucosal drug delivery is being considered as an attractive delivery route for new and existing drug compounds, some of which are only available today through parenteral delivery. For compromised patient populations where swallowing is difficult or where a potential choking hazard is present, a buccal delivery device presents an elegant and effective dosage format with improved bioavailability when compared to other oral formats. This article discusses how oral thin film technology can naturally transition to transmucosal drug delivery applications to provide formulation flexibility and substantial design latitude to developers.
