Permeability Targets for Thin Film (Part 1 of a 2-part article series)

The packaging of thin film and organic photovoltaic (PV) modules is a critical aspect of their lifetime expectancy, performance and cost.  Learnings from the protection of crystalline silicon solar panels and organic light emitting diode displays can be leveraged in the selection and optimization of materials for thin film PV packaging. Basic packaging schemes for thin film photovoltaic modules and these related devices often incorporate an edge seal and/or a pressure sensitive/laminating adhesive (PSLA) which is required to limit edge ingress of moisture vapor and oxygen into the module. This article reviews the various packaging techniques and adhesives that may be used for barrier sealing applications.
